The Design Manager will be responsible for co-ordinating the design elements and interfaces of all aspects of a project ensuring the quality of the design and monitoring the delivery of the project. The Design Manager will report to the Project Manager (on the project), and will be responsible for the daily Design Management, as well as the daily management of multiple Design Consultants. The Design Manager promotes Health Safety and Quality to the projects and through the tender process. He / She will liaise between the Client, Design Consultants and the project staff for
design matters promoting ‘best value’ design solutions, as well as liaising with the Site Manager for the development of design package and procurement strategies. Furthermore, the Design Manager will also be involved in the support for
tenders. Giving advice on the tender design strategy and implementing the Commercial Protocol Designers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- TENDER:
- Support the ‘Bid Manager’
- Interrogation of enquiry documents, in the form of an Employer’s Requirements.
- ‘Value Engineering’ options for the tender submission on operational delivery solutions and alternative design solutions implementing the Pre-Contracts Commercial Protocol.
- Ensure the consultant scope of services, responsibilities and fees are agreed.
- In tender consultant selection and consultant duties.
- Ensuring that the tender design information is handed over to the project team in an effective manner
- Attending client interviews as requested
- PRE-CONSTRUCTION:
- Support the Project Manager by advising on design interfaces, buildability and Value Engineering.
- Managing the integrated design process implementing the Post-Contracts Commercial Protocol.
- Supporting the implementation of the Information management procedures related to design.
- Producing and monitoring the project design programme, in managing design change (internal and external)
- ‘Design Approval Process’ including technical submissions and written approvals
- Develop the design programme and other design control tools (such as the KPI system)
- CONSTRUCTION:
- Support the Project Manager
- Allocating the responsibilities under the CDM regulations, Planning requirements and Local authority requirements
- Production of the design management plan
- Responsible for coordinating the design interfaces of the project ensuring that the correct specifications and drawing requirements are issued to the consultants and subcontractors in accordance with the target programme.
- Ensuring that the project design is delivered in accordance with the programme
- Chairing project design liaison meetings, producing minutes and issuing.
- Advising on buildability and design interfaces of different trades
- Identifying specific training needs from the project design
- Managing design change (internal and external)
- Facilitate the completion of a design risk register. Monitor the design programme and other design controls
- Ensure the company design procedures are adhered to.
- POST CONSTRUCTION:
- The Design Manager will support the Project Manager:
- Project de-briefings
- Reviewing the design solutions used during construction to verify suitability
- Monitor the defects period for ‘Value Engineering‘ options performance
- Attend the project close out audit as required
About you
• Relevant knowledge and experience in site management and construction techniques
• Knowledge of design processes
• Design Managers need to be Chartered Engineer MICE or equivalent
• Commercial awareness
• Preference for marine or M&E works experience
• Have an understanding of different Client procurement routes
• Experience of site/contract procedures would be an advantage
• Ability to organise, plan, programme and manage workloads
• Bidding experience would be desirable
• Contractor or Engineering practice background
